11+ Preparation
Give Your Child the Right Preparation for the 11 Plus
The 11 Plus is not a single, standardised exam. Depending on the schools your child is applying to, they may face different combinations of English, maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning, with each school using its own approach to assessment.
Our 1-2-1 11+ tutoring helps children understand the skills they need, become familiar with different question types and build the confidence to perform under timed conditions.

GL Assessment vs School-Set Papers
Not all 11+ exams are the same. Schools broadly fall into two categories, and understanding the difference can make a significant difference to preparation.
GL Assessment
Schools using GL Assessment typically follow a standardised format covering English, verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and maths.
Examples include:
- Altrincham Grammar School
- Stretford Grammar School
- Sale Grammar School
- Urmston Grammar School
- Bolton School
Exam Preparation
Many independent schools, along with some state schools, use their own bespoke entrance examinations.
These papers commonly focus on English comprehension, written English and maths, although some schools may also include verbal and non-verbal reasoning.
Because each school can approach its assessment differently, preparation needs to reflect the specific exam your child is likely to sit.

What Does the 11 Plus Actually Test?
The 11+ is one of the most competitive academic milestones many children face. With limited places at grammar and selective schools, children need more than subject knowledge — they need confidence, accuracy, speed and the ability to perform under exam conditions.
English
Children may be assessed on reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, grammar and written English. Strong performance requires children to understand texts quickly, identify key information and communicate their ideas clearly.
Verbal Reasoning
Verbal reasoning tests how well children can work with words, language and patterns. Children need to recognise question types quickly, understand relationships between words and apply logical thinking.
Mathematics
11+ maths requires children to apply their knowledge accurately and efficiently, often under significant time pressure. Questions can cover arithmetic, problem-solving, fractions, decimals, percentages, geometry and more.
Non-Verbal Reasoning
Non-verbal reasoning involves working with shapes, patterns and visual information. Children learn to identify relationships, sequences and transformations, often within strict time limits.
